Procrastination Is A Comforting Lie

Image
There is a huge difference between applying something at the right time, and procrastination. When it comes to learning the mastery of public speaking, the right time is NOW. Do not fool yourself into waiting for a weekend, leave days or for the company's capacity building schedule. Start now! Why is it crucial to learn public speaking. This is because every single day, whether you're an introvert or extrovert, you need these skills at the market, when selling, during staff meetings and at social events. How? 💡 Start Small. Speak about a humorous incident that morning 🚲 Connect with something in common, maybe you both love to cycle 💛 Compliment them about something, like their watch brand, glasses or sweater 🟣 Mention something about them that you like, if you've seen them before, for example, how you enjoyed their talk show, or appreciate their business AVOID SELLING, THE FIRST TIME YOU MEET THEM. JUST CREATE THAT INITIAL CONNECTION. There's so much to public...

keep it simple and POWERFUL

Image
Speaking is everyone's right. Speak to inform entertain, express, opine and deliberate. Speak. Listen. Read. Speak. Communicate. Use your words. Use your body. Use your clothes.  With public speaking, many people believe that once they are able to articulate without pause fillers, speak with accurate pronunciation, use memorable anecdotes and impress the audience with humor. Research shows that when we speak, our words contribute to 7% of the impactful communication. If you want to communicate effectively, do not rely on words alone, use your body, your face and your clothes. It is highly advisable to only wear two colours minimum, with simple design. Avoid complicated patterns, like polka dots, stripes, tiny squares and shapes. Use one or two colours, and ensure that the print is simple.  This is because most often the backdrop will have an assortment of  colours which will compete with yours, and then the bright light from cameras and the stage, will eventually drown ou...

WHEN YOU'RE SPEAKING AND THERE IS AN AUDIENCE MEMBER WHOM YOU HAVE ISSUES WITH

Image
There will be days when you are speaking to an audience and amongst them, is someone you bear a grudge towards or have not yet reconciled certain differences with. If you are aware that they will be part of the audience, you are able to just give them a call, send them a courtesy message. Even if they may not respond, it does put you at ease. What do you do when you are in the middle of your delivery and the said person walks into the room. Take a pause and greet everyone again. Photo taken during the Grant Thornton 20th anniversary in Kampala. Example: For those of you who may have missed the beginning, ‘This is a journey of how women can grow their businesses at a global scale.’ And then introduce yourself again and greet the audience. This courtesy will send an important signal to that person and at least for the moment, tension will be reduced. What do you do when they are the first person to ask you a question? Team Building Session with DFCU-2022 Thank them for the question...

MODERATION AND HOW TO DO IT BEST

Image
On average, we come across seven different panel discussions a week.  The common topics are health, finance and technology. The moderators are selected for different reasons ranging from their knowledge on the topic, their familiarity with the panelists and their availability. To moderate means to avoid extremes, according to various definitions online.  Moderation requires that you present a middle ground of sanity and objectivity, if you are selected to take on this task. It is fascinating to watch a moderator who takes sides on a certain topic and even draws into self-induced arguments with one of the panelists, in an attempt to draw attention, entertain the audience or out of lack of knowledge of the task at hand. No matter how educated you are on a topic, how well-known you are in certain circle of influence or what your last name may be, as a moderator avoid extremes. The attention should be drawn to the panelists. You are the link between the panelists and the aud...

DO YOU HAVE FUN WHILE SPEAKING?

Image
Do you have fun, while speaking? Do you engage with your core and break out in belly laughter, just because you can. Is your audience agog? And does it bother you if you have answered no? Well, just picture an image; something rare like your newborn asleep at your breast, or the sunrise ahead of you on your morning drive. Think of a rare image and use it to say something that people already know. You just need to emphasise it. Inspire them. Let them know that they can win, no matter what. Time, Public Speaking, Lift.

Image
It's 5:00am on a Sunday. Why would you be up, except to turn off the television that's still blaring with the final episode of your favourite soap, that you've watched sixteen times in this lockdown? Doll house section, created by two young sisters. Photo used with permission. The only sane reason to be up at such a ridiculous hour, would be to make sure that the cockroaches you sprayed, haven't manifested in the crisps, whose packet you left open. How time has deluded us! Many are lured into the tangled misconception that people have nothing to do all day, except to wait for the Lockdown to be lifted. They believe that the elements of time, the sun, the tick-tock of clocks, and the months, have buried their heads because of the corona-virus, waiting to be advised when to come out. "Since you have all day, why don't I call at 7:00pm?" they retort, with impudence, glaring at another social media live event. You politely remind them that the ...
